About the designer

Hi, I’m Alan Egan, a mechanical engineer by trade and a maker at heart. My background includes designing jigs, fixtures, and manufacturing robots, but my real passion lies in hands-on workshop projects.

Like many, I used to create French cleats on the fly—cutting scrap wood without considering spacing, size, or organization. Over time, I realized the inefficiencies of this approach and set out to create a structured system. After countless prototypes, the Neat French Cleat System was born—a modular, optimized approach to workshop storage that eliminates clutter while enhancing workflow.

My goal? To help fellow makers, woodworkers, and DIYers transform their workspaces into efficient, visually cohesive setups with minimal effort.

From Pigsty to Productivity

I built my workshop during the first lockdown in 2020. Before that, it was a neglected brick outbuilding that once housed pigs! It’s not a huge space—about the size of a double garage—but it’s packed with tools and designed for efficiency. One unique challenge? A chimney right in the center. I considered removing it, but it powers the wood burner, my only heat source in the colder months. Instead of seeing it as an obstacle, I worked around it to create a functional and organized workspace.

My workshop is packed with tools that help me bring my designs to life. My go-to machines include:

• Gweike Cloud 50W CO2 Laser – My primary workhorse for cutting and engraving French cleats with precision.
• Sculpfun S9 Diode Laser – A reliable backup, though much slower than the Gweike.

• Festool CMS Table Saw – Delivers clean, accurate cuts every time.
• Bosch GCM Mitre Saw – Perfect for making precise angle cuts.
• Pillar Drill – An old but trusty drill press that still gets the job done.

🔹 Other Essentials:

• Creality Ender 3 3D Printer – Great for prototyping custom parts.
• Shapr3D on iPad Pro – My go-to software for designing new cleats and tool holders.
• LightBurn – The best software for controlling my lasers and fine-tuning cuts.
